Drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 38th round of the 2002 amateur draft.
Randy Wells was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 38th Round of the 2002 MLB Draft. He began his professional career as a catcher in the Cubs system in 2002. After struggling with the bat, the Cubs converted him to a pitcher. He gradually worked his way through the Cubs ranks before getting selected in the Rule 5 Draft prior to 2008 by the Toronto Blue Jays. He made his ML debut on April 5, 2008 with the Jays. After just one game with Toronto, Wells was returned to the Cubs. He ended up making three appearances in September that season for Chicago. He was called up to start early in 2009 and continuously exceeded all expectations during his rookie season. In 27 starts, Wells went 12-10 with a 3.05 ERA and 165.1 innings pitched. He also had a WAR rating of 3.2. Wells took a small step back in 2010, going 8-14 with a 4.26 ERA but still had a WAR of 3.0. He was injured early on in 2011 before finishing the season with 23 starts. In total, Wells went 7-6 with a 4.99 ERA. He was optioned to Triple-A Iowa after missing out on a big league rotation spot.
