Blake DeWitt was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers out of high school with the 28th overall pick in the 2004 MLB Draft. In five-plus seasons in the Minor Leagues with LA, DeWitt posted a .277/.337/.443 line with 68 homers in 577 games. DeWitt eventually debuted with the Dodgers on Opening Day 2008. In his rookie season, the left-handed hitting infielder hit .264 with 9 home runs and 52 RBI as LA's primary 3rd baseman. DeWitt regressed in 2009 and spent most of the season in Triple-A and ended up appearing in just 31 games for the big-league club. The Dodgers shifted him to 2nd base in 2010 with no real improvement offensively (.723 OPS in 2010 with LA, .728 OPS in 2008). On Trade Deadline Day '10, DeWitt was dealt to the Cubs along with Minor League pitchers Brett Wallach and Kyle Smit in exchange for Ted Lilly and Ryan Theriot. He played 2nd base nearly everday for the Cubs for the remainder of the season and had a line of .250/.314/.375. In Spring Training 2011, DeWitt was slated to get the majority of the looks at 2nd base again, but was beat out by both Darwin Barney and Jeff Baker and became the odd man out of the Cubs infield. He came up with some clutch hits for the Cubs in 2011 in a limited role. In 243 plate appearances, DeWitt recorded a .265/.305/.413/.718 mark with five homers and 26 RBI.
