The Pirates made Maholm the eighth overall pick in 2003. After a couple of seasons in the Pittsburgh minor league system, the southpaw debuted with the Pirates on July 9, 2005. After going 3-1 with a 2.18 ERA in six starts his rookie season, Maholm averaged 30 starts a season over the next six seasons with Pittsburgh. In his Pirates career, he went 53-73 with a 4.36 ERA. Maholm is coming off arguably his best season as a pro. In 26 starts, he went 6-14 but with a very respectable and career-best 3.66 ERA (his rookie season doesn't qualify). He walked 2.8 per nine and struck out 5.4 per nine over 162.1 innings. The Cubs seemingly got a great value pickup with Maholm with a one year, $4.75M deal for 2012 and a $6.5M team option for 2013 or a $250K buyout. He'll help fill out the middle to back end of the Cubs rotation.
