With their first pick in the 2012 MLB Draft, the Cubs selected high school outfielder Alberto Almora. Almora, who the Cubs zeroed in on for some time apparently, is said to have five-tool potential and great mental makeup, making it more likely he will come close to his potential, whatever that potential may be.
John Arguello of miCubs and ChicagoNOW on Cubs Den is high on the pick as well and doesn't think people should roll their eyes at the phrase "great mental makeup." "If you have (good mental makeup), you're more likely to make use of the tools that you do have...That's the best of both worlds."
Arguello also finds Cubs sandwich round picks RHP Pierce Johnson and RHP Paul Blackburn as high ceiling as well as high floor players also good on makeup. "(Johnson), if healthy, can be a #2 starter" and reiterated that Johnson could be "quite a steal" if that health holds up.
I also spoke with John about the Cubs' approach for the remainder of the draft, Javier Baez, Josh Vitters and the state of the system as a whole.
